Guyana is rich in oil—but too many Guyanese are still struggling. Meanwhile, some foreign contractors are behaving like they’ve found an open vault.

Lindsayca is now at the center of that concern.

Awarded US$759 million to build two critical facilities at Wales—a Natural Gas Liquids plant and a 300MW power station—the company is now saying that price is no longer enough. Its new demand? An additional US$250 million from the Guyana Government.

Let that sink in.

This is the same contractor that has already secured US$102 million more through a dispute ruling. That pushes the cost of its portion of the project beyond US$1.1 billion—and counting.

And still, there are delays. Conflicting timelines. Growing uncertainty about completion.

So the question must be asked: where does it end?

Guyana is now cornered between two costly choices—pay hundreds of millions more, or scrap the arrangement and start over at even greater expense. That is not partnership. That is pressure.

And it sets a dangerous precedent.

Because if Guyana gives in today, what stops the next demand tomorrow? Another “unexpected cost”? Another renegotiation under threat of delay?

This is how countries lose control of major projects—piece by piece, concession by concession.

The Wales Gas-to-Energy project was supposed to deliver cheaper electricity and transform lives. Instead, it is beginning to look like a test of how much Guyana can be pushed.

The Government must decide: hold the line, or open the floodgates.

Because once Guyana is seen as a country that always pays more in the end, every contract becomes a negotiation—and every negotiation becomes a risk.
